The coastal Southern Pacific zone of Costa Rica is home to roughly 400 to 450 different species of birds.  The region is famous for being one of the most biologically intense places on earth.  The mix of lowland tropical rainforests, mangroves and coastal habitats provides the perfect variety of avian life.

Our location offers access to a rich diversity of tropical bird species  Just step outside your villa into a rich jungle environment where birdlife is active throughout the day. Whether you explore nearby trails, join a birding tour, or simply observe from your terrace, every moment brings the opportunity to encounter something extraordinary.  Our guests have identified over 70 bird species here on Finca Verde, our farm, tropical food forest  and nature resort.

The Barú reserve boasts 330 hectares of lush tropical forest, home to fascinating species such as trogons, motmots, antshrikes, manakins, tinamous and curassows.  The paths through the reserve are generally good for all levels of hikers.

Naranjito Rainforest

Your guide will assist in identifying different birds in this location where 250 different species have been spotted. Observe bird species such as Black-Mandible Toucans, White-Throated Shrike-Tanagers and Short-Tailed Hawks.
Hummingbirds, birds of prey, seedeaters, thrushes, doves, trogons and many more make this area their home, where birdwatchers have spotted up to 70 species in one day. Includes snacks and water.

Quetzales National Park

This tour is for observing one of the most beautiful birds in the world, the Resplendent Quetzal. Visitors will be accompanied by a guide equipped with a telescope, binoculars, and a bird guidebook to facilitate spotting and identification. This tour is typically recommended for early morning hours.
The birdwatching season in our area is from November until mid-June; during the other months of the year we must look for another site outside the property to guarantee the sighting.

Los Cusingos Bird Sanctuary

Los Cusingos Neotropical bird sanctuary is the former home of Dr. Alexander Skutch, one of the world’s most famous ornithologists and co-author of the premiere birding book, “A Guide to the Birds of Costa Rica”. It is a must visit for serious birders!  You can hire guides on-site or just walk the well-maintained trails to spot turquoise cotingas, honeycreepers, and manakins and over 300 bird species, including rare species like the white-crested coquette.  Los Cusingos Bird Sanctuary is recognized as one of the most important birdwatching hotspots in southern Costa Rica.
