In the rainforest, we get all sorts of insects. They are an important part of our ecosystem. We use frequent, natural (but effective) pest control application and constant vigilance to keep the indoor space bug-free. It is helpful to keep the screens closed at all times. If you should happen to see a pest where it shouldn’t be, please alert your hosts immediately so that it can be removed.

From April to December is known as rainy season. We call it the green season. We get rain nearly every day, for part of the day, but seldom all day. Mornings are sunny and rainy afternoons and evenings are great for sleeping. January through April is our summer dry season. It rains very little and is usually hot and sunny in the day time. Cloudy skies and finding shade, either from jungle foliage our being indoors makes the climate comfortable. In either season, carry an umbrella. If you forget, you can use one of ours.
All-terrain shoes with good traction, loose fitting lightweight natural fiber clothes that breathe, strong SPF sunblock and bug repellant, flip-flops, a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, bathing suit and sarong, a camera and perhaps a go-pro or drone (if you’re into that), a strong flashlight or headlamp, a water-proof shoulder bag, a collapsible soft cooler and a water bottle.
A good tip is to go to the bank in your home town and ask for the amount you are willing to carry with you in crisp, twenty-dollar bills. The first thing you pay for when you arrive will give you change in the local currency and then you’ll have small increments for tipping, tolls, etc. Most merchants and cab drivers will accept a US bill, if it is pristine. $100 bills must be cashed for smaller bills or local colones in banks with your passport for ID. The large bills can be used for fishing trips or other high ticket items. Merchants don’t carry much change in their drawers and won’t accept them.
Yes, you can use your phone at any POS, as you normally do.
Yes. And it must have more than six months left on it before it expires from the time you will be returning to your home country. You must carry it with you, a complete photocopy of it or a photograph of it on your phone. Carrying it in a secure and hidden place with you everywhere is the best practice.
Yes, you can. Uber is active in San José. However, they are not permitted to enter the airport pickup loop. You will have to walk out to the main road to meet your Uber. (~400 yards)
The water at your villa comes from a very deep well on the property and is of higher quality than any bottled water you could buy. In fact, the municipal tap water in general in Costa Rica is quite good.
Yes there are three hospitals and various urgent care clinics offering quality care. We also have a multi-lingual neighborhood first response team called S.O.S. that responds very quickly to all emergencies. They stabilize the patient until the ambulance arrives. (always call 911 first)
Yes, it is very safe. Locals are largely very friendly and helpful. Use reasonable caution: don’t leave valuables in your car, lock it up and only swim where you see others swimming. There are several lifeguard staffed beaches in the area.
The main roads are paved and well maintained, but are very curvy in the mountains, so you need to stay focused on you driving at all times. On the many dirt roads, stay alert and watch for the occasional large pothole or animal crossing. Always check your mirrors in case a fellow motorist decides to pass or is not observing the rules of the road.
Our villas are located in Finca Verde, our private gated nature preserve. It is completely safe to walk everywhere at night, but be sure to use a flashlight to see where you are stepping.
There are two well-stocked convenience stores and a pharmacy here in Platanillo and a large supermarket and health food store in Dominical which is a 20 minute drive away. There are farmers markets in the region almost every day of the week, as well as many local roadside fruit stands.
